Details
This is a standard NEMA 17 bi-polar stepper motor, used in many 3D printer designs and certainly in many other electronics and robotics projects as well.
The flatted shaft allows you to tighten down the set screw on a gear, pulley, or coupler and know that it isn't going to slip. Many motors come without flats; the resulting slipping of the attached pulley or gear can cause a loss in accuracy or failed prints. Over-tightening to compensate for an un-flatted shaft risks damaging the hardware you're securing to the motor.
